General
What is Freely Given?
Freely Given is an AI-powered Bible companion app designed to help you engage with Scripture more deeply. It includes features like AI Bible Chat (where you can ask any question about the Bible and get scripture-backed answers), daily devotionals, daily verse notifications, structured reading plans, a built-in Bible reader with highlights and bookmarks, and a Focus Mode for distraction-free reading sessions.
How does the AI work?
Freely Given uses Anthropic's advanced language models to understand your questions and generate thoughtful, scripture-backed responses. The AI is designed to reference specific Bible verses and provide balanced, well-researched answers. It's a study tool to help you explore the Bible — not a replacement for personal study, pastoral guidance, or community worship.
Is Freely Given affiliated with a specific denomination?
No. Freely Given is designed to be a helpful tool for Christians of all backgrounds and traditions. The AI aims to provide balanced, scripture-grounded responses that respect the diversity within the Christian faith. When denominational perspectives differ on a topic, the AI will typically present multiple viewpoints and encourage you to explore further with your own pastor or faith community.
Is Freely Given available on both iOS and Android?
Yes. Freely Given is available for download on both the Apple App Store (iOS) and Google Play Store (Android). Both versions include the same features and your account syncs across devices.
Account
How do I create an account?
Download Freely Given from your app store and follow the on-screen prompts. You'll need a valid email address to create your account. Once registered, you can start using the free plan immediately.
Can I use Freely Given on multiple devices?
Yes. Sign in with the same account on any supported device and your data — including bookmarks, highlights, notes, and reading progress — will sync automatically. Your Premium subscription also transfers across devices as long as you're signed in with the same account.
How do I delete my account?
You can delete your account from within the app by going to Settings and selecting "Delete Account." This permanently removes all your data, including chat history, bookmarks, highlights, notes, and reading progress. Please note that deleting your account does not cancel an active subscription — you must cancel your subscription through your app store separately.
I forgot my password. How do I reset it?
On the login screen, tap "Forgot Password" and enter the email address associated with your account. You'll receive a password reset link via email. If you don't see the email, check your spam folder. If you still can't access your account, contact us at [email protected].
Subscription
What's the difference between Free and Premium?
The free plan includes 15 Bible questions per week, daily verse notifications, all reading plans, and the Bible reader with bookmarks. Premium ($4.99/mo or $39.99/yr) unlocks 20 Bible questions per day, full devotional access, priority AI responses, custom notification schedules, Focus Mode, and advanced highlights and notes.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through your device's app store. On iOS, go to Settings > Your Name > Subscriptions > Freely Given and tap Cancel. On Android, open Google Play > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > Freely Given and tap Cancel. You'll retain Premium access through the end of your current billing period.
Is there a free trial for Premium?
Yes. New subscribers receive a free trial period to explore Premium features before being charged. The exact trial length is displayed when you initiate the subscription in your app store. If you cancel before the trial ends, you won't be charged.
Why is Freely Given so much cheaper than other AI Bible apps?
We believe Bible study tools should be accessible to everyone, not just those who can afford $28/mo. We've optimized our technology stack and kept our team lean so we can offer a premium experience at $4.99/mo — that's 6x cheaper than Haven. We'd rather serve more people at a fair price than fewer people at a premium one.
Features
What kind of questions can I ask the AI?
You can ask virtually anything related to the Bible — questions about specific verses or passages, theological concepts, historical context, how Scripture applies to modern life, comparisons between different parts of the Bible, and more. The AI will provide thoughtful responses with relevant Scripture references. For best results, be specific in your questions.
What is Focus Mode?
Focus Mode is a Premium feature that creates a dedicated, timed reading session for distraction-free engagement with Scripture. Set a timer, and Freely Given tracks your sessions, builds reading streaks, and awards badges for consistent practice. It's designed to help you build a regular habit of focused, intentional time in the Word.
Can I highlight and take notes in the Bible reader?
Yes. The built-in Bible reader supports multi-color highlighting, bookmarks, and notes. Free users have access to basic bookmarks. Premium users get the full highlighting and notes experience with advanced organization and search capabilities. All your annotations sync across devices.
How are the daily devotionals created?
Daily devotionals are generated using AI, connecting a passage of Scripture to themes relevant to daily life. Each devotional includes a Scripture reading, a reflection, discussion questions, and a prayer prompt. Because they're AI-generated, you get fresh content every day. As with all AI content, we recommend using devotionals as a starting point for your own reflection and study.
Technical
Does Freely Given require an internet connection?
An internet connection is required for AI Chat, devotionals, and syncing your data across devices. The Bible reader can be used offline once content has been downloaded. Reading plans and saved content (bookmarks, highlights, notes) are available offline and will sync when you reconnect.
The app is running slowly. What can I do?
If Freely Given feels sluggish, try the following: make sure you're running the latest version of the app, close other apps running in the background, restart the app, and check your internet connection speed. If the issue continues, try restarting your device. For persistent performance problems, contact us at [email protected] with your device model and OS version so we can investigate.
Which Bible translations are available?
Freely Given includes multiple widely-used English translations. The specific translations available may vary as we expand our library. You can switch between translations at any time in the Bible reader settings.
How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?
We'd love to hear from you. Send an email to [email protected] with a description of the bug or your feature suggestion. For bugs, please include your device model, OS version, and steps to reproduce the issue. Screenshots are always helpful. Your feedback helps us make Freely Given better for everyone.
